There have been many interesting designs in the history of motorcycles, but one of the most original was probably Megola. The name was derived from the abbreviation of the names of three partners – the founders of the company: Swiss banker Meixner, the famous designer Cockerell (when changing Co to Go) and Landgraf's production manager.
The idea of building a vehicle with a hub motor was not new. We have already met with this in 1892 within Millet. However, it turned out, that it is more advantageous to mount the motor in the front wheel, therefore from 1922 This particular model was produced in series in the year.
Rotary five-cylinder engine (each cylinder with displacement 128 cm3) drove the front wheel without a clutch and gearbox. Engine (along with the wheel) it rotated forward and the crankshaft, based on a toothed gear, it was spinning six times faster in the opposite direction. The floatless carburetor was located on the right side of the wheel hub, the magneto on the left side. The power unit weighed no more than 30 kg and reached power 7,3 kW (10 KM) at 3000 rpm. Maximum engine speed – 3600 per minute - they meant simultaneously 600 front wheel rotation. Theoretically, this gave the speed of the order 145 km/h. Megola had two fuel tanks. Main tank with a capacity 14,75 liter was hidden under the body, fuel flowed from it into a small reservoir above the engine under pressure, produced with a hand pump. A significant advantage of the Megola was its excellent suspension: two semi-elliptical leaf springs at the rear and one quarter-elliptical at the front. Two independent brakes with relatively high efficiency acted on the rear wheel. Equipment that deserved attention was a set of illuminated control devices: amperomierz, tachometer and fuel pressure gauge in the tank. The motorcycle was produced in two versions – tourist with a sprung wheel and a padded saddle, reaching speed 80 km / h and sports, without rear suspension, which developed speed with a more powerful engine 100 km/h.
