In place of a five-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement 2874 dm3 and power 88 kW, to which we had reservations, because she could hardly handle a heavy car (curb weight 1890 kg i 2520 kg fully loaded), model Musso IL6 3200 got a six-cylinder, in-line gasoline engine. What is its origin? It is a worn-out Mercedes power unit, which found to 1998 years used in passenger versions of the E Klasse, later replaced by engines with a V-shaped cylinder arrangement. With all the benefit of the inventory, the production of the older version of the in-line engine was transferred to Korea, to SsangYong, associated with the manufacturer under the sign of the three-pointed star. Koreans used these engines to power cars – the off-roader Musso and the luxurious Chairman. SsangYong found itself in 1998 r. under the management of the Korean Daewoo concern and this is how the Mercedes engines went to Daewoo.
The new power unit gave the "Rhino" – Musso a lot of vigor. This is a naturally aspirated displacement gasoline engine 3199 cm3 reaches maximum power 162 kW and maximum torque 307 Nm. Naturally, comparing these two different drive units, working according to different work cycles, is for reference only, but it is a fact, that the traction performance of the IL6 3200 compared to the 602TD model they are much better, what we could find out, by performing several test runs under different conditions. In city traffic, the car was consuming 18,2 dm3 / 100 km, and on extra-urban routes at speeds up to 120 km – 13,3 dm3 / 100 km. We remind you, that the Daewoo Mussso with a turbocharged diesel engine tested by us last year consumed 12,4 dm3 of diesel oil in the city and in the field and 10,9 dm3 on the road. The known truth is confirmed, that you have to pay for better performance!
The engine with the designation Mercedes MB M 104.981 E32, despite his age, has a fairly modern design, m.in. a combustion chamber with four valves spaced at an angle of 45 °, two camshafts, chain driven and valve control by hydraulic tappets. All engine equipment is driven by a single V-belt. The motor head is made of light alloy, and the crankshaft is mounted on 7 main bearings. Fuel injection and ignition are electronically controlled by the Motronic system from Bosch. Maximum torque in 90% is available from 1900 crankshaft revolutions and does not fall below this value. Such characteristics ensure great flexibility of the unit and a large reserve of driving force in off-road driving.
M 104 it is considered to be one of the most silenced Mercedes engines. Proponents of the in-line arrangement of cylinders preach, that less noise and minimal vibration are the result of a smoother engine cycle, burning the mixture every 120 ° of rotation of the crankshaft, which cannot be said about V-engines with the same number of cylinders. The motor is mounted so as to reduce vibrations, transferred to the bodywork. In the opinion of Mercedes users, it is considered to be very durable, obtaining the waveforms of the order 1 million km for major repairs. Promising!
Comparing this unit with a good drive unit, which they are composed of: Tremec five-speed gearbox, transfer gear and reducer with chain drive, is actually a successful marriage. The bands are well polished, which manifests itself, among others. fact, that engaging the four-wheel drive does not increase the noise inside the vehicle. Switching the two-wheel drive (on the rear wheels) the quadricycle is automatic. Under normal road conditions, the powertrain operates in a 2WD system, in difficult viscous clutch engages 4WD drive. When we face difficult terrain obstacles, you need the car to stop for a while or drive at a speed to 2 km / h and after depressing the clutch pedal and setting the gearshift lever to the neutral position, set the knob to the 4L position. The car then exhibits the maximum off-road qualities. A reducer is included in the drive system, which increases the amount of drive torque transmitted to the wheels, but at the same time it changes the speed range, achieved on individual heats. You can then beat the "Rhinoceros" – Musso steep climbs, ride in deep sand, mud, snow. The off-road capabilities of this Daewoo model, however, are limited by the use of Kumho Power TR P256 / 70 R15 tires without an off-road tread pattern. You also have to be careful when negotiating steep slopes, as the auxiliary brake is not working effectively, when the car goes backwards. Despite the considerable height of the body (the floor of the car is located 550 mm above the ground) the windshield is easily splashed in the field.
