Kia Joice – test

kia joiceJoice is a proposition of the Korean company KIA, which – one can say – specializes in offering family cars. After Carnival and Carens, the third KIA minivan appeared on the market – Joice, standing out among a large group of competitors with the possibility of carrying more passengers.
Looking from outside at the vehicle, similar in silhouette to a large station wagon, it's hard to imagine, that the interior can fit as much as 7 people: two in the front seats, three in the middle and two in the back. During the test drives, we paid particular attention to this third row of seats. In any car, it is usually most comfortable on the front seats, second-row comfort depends primarily on the size of the body, while seats in the third row of seats are still a rarity in the minivan class. Often this row appears in large estate cars and is usually adapted to transporting small children, that are rear facing. We used to sit in the rear seats with this attitude, facing Joice in the direction of travel. We were surprised by a pleasant surprise! The width of the two rear seats is normal, there is a lot of space overhead (this is due to the high-floating rear part of the body), the wheel arches serve as armrests, there are also cup holders. Two passengers have comfortable three-point and seat belts. The downside of this place, is a large number of heads, which passengers seated in the "third row" have in front of them - almost like in a cinema. You have to congratulate the Koreans, that they managed to length 2,6 m, which separates the instrument panel from the rear window, make room for 7 people.
KIA Joice, also known as Carstar in some markets, it is definitely a multifunctional car. After folding the rear and center seats, you get a generous load space, unfortunately not flat, because folded rear seats do not create a level surface, and the backrest of the center seat turns into a handy table after folding, and not to the floor of the hold. Symmetrically divided seat backrests allow for creating many combinations of cargo space disposal. When six or seven people travel by car, the trunk is small, while after lifting the cover we find a storage box (about dimensions 930 x 300 x 140 mm), where you can store a lot of small things. Naturally, this is not a space that replaces the trunk, but crayfish are also eaten.
The driver's seat is comfortable, the seat is height-adjustable, all controls and controls are close at hand, and the left "clutch" leg can be kept on the cradle. The driver's armrest is practical, at the same time a handy, a small and well disguised storage box. The "two-level" instrument panel is clearly visible, with a second level filling the space under the glass and containing the time clock. The driver's airbag is standard equipment of the car, The passenger airbag is available at an additional cost. An example of concern for the comfort of passengers sitting in three rows are e.g.. three interior lighting lamps.
Seven people in the car are, taking statistical averages, time 525 kg. If we add baggage to that, it will come out, that the car must be able to be transported over 600 kg of load. Manufacturer, by constructing this family-friendly vehicle, has fixed its payload on 720 kg. As a result, the maximum total weight of the car is 2070 kg and is a problem for the driveline. To provide this over 2-tonne car with decent traction, it had to be equipped with a suitable power unit. And that's how it happened. KIA Joice runs on gasoline, four-cylinder, two liter, 16-a valve engine with two overhead camshafts and a multi-point fuel injection system, reaches maximum power 102 kW. This large power unit copes well with the car, even with its full load. Nor can you complain too much about the excessive fuel consumption – on the road Joice consumes 9,6 dm3 / 100 km, and in the city 11,7 dm3 / 100 km.
These are acceptable sizes for this 7-seater Korean "bus". According to the manufacturer, the engine meets the Euro emission standards 3. The external noise level while driving is 72,5 dB(A), while the inner one is stationary 79 dB(A).
Classic solutions were used in the car's chassis: 14-The inch wheels are independently suspended from the front on McPherson struts, at the rear on trailing wishbones and coil springs. The rack and pinion steering mechanism is hydraulically assisted, brake system – vacuum. The ABS system combined with the EBD system regulating the braking force of the rear axle wheels is standard equipment of the car. Gas, low-pressure shock absorbers and stabilizers in both axles allow for quick speed, safe driving even on poor surfaces and with the car fully loaded. The suspension characteristics were chosen like this, to provide passengers with high driving comfort, nevertheless, the vehicle does not tilt excessively in the bends, keeps the track stably, precisely responds to steering wheel movements.
I did not really like the styling of the front part of the body with numerous embossed fenders and the engine cover. Powerful front bumper, painted to match the body color, makes, that the silhouette of this part of the car seems too heavy. The four headlamps have separate functions for the low beam and high beam, size and arrangement enhance the impression of massiveness of the vehicle. Every car is equipped with fog lights.
