The driving scenario is as follows: we start a cold engine, we start without warming up, we drive a few kilometers and park. After some time, we start again with the engine cold, we pass not far, we park… and so many times. Not all of us are aware, how harmful these practices are to the engine, even the most modern car. Detailed research has shown, that 75% engine wear, and more specifically the cylinder bearing and camshaft running surfaces occur during starting and driving with the engine warm. During this time, the piston comes into direct contact with the surface of the cylinder or the tappet with the cam, not separated by a layer of oil film – in practice, the engine then runs without lubrication. Additives used in most oils, anti-wear of the engine, start to work effectively, when the engine oil temperature reaches a minimum of 50 ° C. Until then, it has been average 8-11 minutes, consequently the engine runs without full protection all this time. As research shows 50% engine runtime is lost under such unfavorable conditions.
Castrol company, developed Castrol GTX Magnatec engine oil – fully synthetic with SAE 5W-40 viscosity grade, in which a new generation of additives prevents excessive wear of the engine during the warm-up period. A combination of ingredients is used in the oil, in which there is a synthetic ester, adhering to metal parts of the engine, just like a magnet (hence the name of the new oil!), creating a durable protective coating also then, when the engine is still cool. Composition of additives implementing the UMA molecular attraction method (Unique Molecular Attraction) was developed and patented by Castrol.
GTX Magnatec oil has undergone a series of tests. One of the attempts, ALOFT test proved the unique properties of this oil (Advanced Lubrication of Follower Technology), consisting in the measurement of the oil film layer under engine start-up conditions (see diagram). During the test, an image of the temperature of the mating engine parts is obtained. The less metal is in contact with metal, the lower the working temperature of the mating parts. The two-minute test of engine start-up and its operation "cold" was convinced, that in the first 45 seconds, the part temperature was lowered from 280 ° C, which they achieved when using conventional oil to as little as 70 ° C after using Magnatec oil. From the result obtained, a conclusion can be drawn, that when starting and heating the engine, its wear is four times lower with the use of new Castrol oil.
Another study involved measuring a Toyota car camshaft wear using the Tallysurf method. The test consists in measuring the depth of the roller surface profile after a 100-hour test, as a representative way of showing engine wear. Measurement results (shown in the chart) do not indicate wear when using GTX Magnatec oil (middle part of the chart) and a significant change in profile when using the oil recommended by Toyota (bottom of the chart).
One should ask, how Magnatec oil behaves at higher engine operating temperatures. How can you find out (see diagram), despite the activation of additives in conventional oil after reaching a temperature of 70 ° C, GTX Magnatec provides better lubrication also at higher temperatures.
Taking care of the natural environment, Castrol by reducing the amount of chlorine in the production of GTX Magnatec, facilitates its further disposal.
The research results are encouraging, and it seems, that the use of Castrol GTX Magnatec oil can be particularly recommended in the engines of cars driving short distances. Despite the innovative technology, the price of Magnatec oil is competitive in relation to the prices of high-quality products of other companies, 4-a liter container of GTX Magnatec costs approx. 135 PLN.
